Lesson #1 – If you are paying a publisher, POD or otherwise, to publish your book, you are NOT self-publishing.  You may be a published author but you are not a self-publisher.
 
Lesson #2 – If a publisher charges you to publish your book, they are a Vanity Press.  It’s as simple as that.  There are no “new paradigms” or “new technologies” that change anything.  There is no difference between taking thousands of dollars from hundreds of people and taking hundreds of dollars from thousands
